Jesus describes the work of the Holy Spirit in the “hearts” (minds) of men when He says this: (John 16:1–15).
The three things that Jesus said the Holy Spirit seeks to accomplish in a person’s life are these:
- Make sure they know they have sinned.
- Make sure they know that, because they are guilty, they are just awaiting sentencing.
- Make sure they know God will grant them a declaration of not guilty if they apologize and believe the Truth He has revealed in the Scriptures.
Now we come to the knotty little issue of how the Holy Spirit approaches a person. This is where the assumption that the Holy Spirit is a “spirit” in the sense of Halloween and haunted houses leads to absolute nonsense. That view of the Holy Spirit is a lie of Satan that is intended to completely obscure the Truth the Early Church understood. The Truth is, the Holy Spirit is a “spirit” in the sense that the Greeks thought of pneuma. The Greeks believed pneuma came through the five senses: seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling.
In accord with the agreememt that God made with the people of Israel at Mount Sinai, the Holy Spirit does not speak directly to anyone who has not been born again; He uses a person who functions as His “mouth” to deliver His “Spirit” to us. Hence the Church offices of the Apostle, Prophet, Teacher, and Evangelist. The men who occupy those offices deliver a message that contains the pneuma necessary for others to know what the Holy Spirit has to say to them.
If a person hears the Truth of the Gospel, apologizes to the Lord, and believes the Pneuma of Truth that the Holy Spirit is, that Pneuma comes to life within him and the person is born again. That’s when the role of the Holy Spirit takes on an absolutely essential role in the person.
